Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRC) in Plain Language

In 1963, Congress started the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRCs). They wanted to create some of the best places in the country for research about disabilities.

These centers are the government's first long-term plan to help people with disabilities.

What do IDDRCs do?

Research: Scientists at these centers study how the brain works and how people behave. They look for new ways to solve health problems and improve daily life.

Education: They teach community leaders the best ways to support people with disabilities.

Service: They take what they learn in the lab and use it to help real people and families in their communities.
