Health & Disability SIG: Advocacy and Civil Legal Topics

The Health & Disability Special Interest Group (SIG) will hold its first meeting of the year featuring Maureen van Stone, Esq., MS, presenting on advocacy and civil legal issues in the disability field.

The session will address:

  • Supported decision making agreements
  • Advance directives
  • Advance directives for mental health
  • Statutory powers of attorney
  • Adult guardianship
  • End of life care
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and **Section 504 regulations

This meeting will provide participants with valuable information on legal tools and protections that promote autonomy, rights, and access to services for people with disabilities.

Maureen Van Stone

Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute


Maureen is an Assistant Vice President and the Director of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) at Kennedy Krieger Institute (Maryland’s designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service), and the founder of Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law), a MCDD community-based program. Project HEAL is Maryland’s only comprehensive medical-legal partnership, which provides advocacy and civil legal services to children with disabilities who receive services at Kennedy Krieger. Maureen is an associate faculty for the Department of Mental Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and affiliate faculty for the Wendy Klag Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Maureen is an emeritus member of Kennedy Krieger’s ethics committee. Maureen serves as an at-large member of the board of directors of the Association of University Centers on Disabilities and the treasurer of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, Inc. Maureen is appointed to the executive committee of the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Council, the Maryland Developmental Disabilities Waiver Advisory Committee, and the Maryland State Department of Education’s State Personnel Development Grant Advisory Committee.

Maureen earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Southern California, a master’s degree in developmental psychology at The Johns Hopkins University, and a Juris Doctor at Whittier Law School, with a concentration on children’s legal issues.
