AUCD Councils in Plain Language

The AUCD has four special teams called Councils. These groups help our members stay connected, talk about new ideas, and share the best ways to help people with disabilities.

Each Council has leaders who help run things. These leaders also have a seat on the AUCD Board of Directors, which means they help make big decisions for the whole organization. Councils meet online during the year and get together in person once a year in Washington, D.C.

Why Should You Join a Council?

Joining a Council is a great way to meet new people who care about the same things you do. In a council, you can:

  • Share Ideas: Brainstorm and solve problems with people who have years of experience.
  • Work Together: Help write grants or create new programs.
  • Be a Leader: You can run for roles like Chair or Secretary to help lead the Council.
  • Make a Difference: Help decide what the most important goals should be for the future.

Who Can Join?

Anyone who is part of the AUCD Network can join! This includes people just starting their careers and students (trainees).

How Do You Join?

Its very easy to sign up:

  • Go to the webpage for the Council you like.
  • Look on the right side for the email listserv link.
  • Press on the link, put in your information, and sign up!

What Does a Council Member Do?

Members are encouraged to join in and help! You can:

  • Join meetings and join the conversation.
  • Help create or share helpful resources.
  • Help host online classes (webinars).
  • Vote on important topics or run for a leadership spot.

What Is the Difference Between a Council and a SIG?

You might have heard of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Here is how they are different:

  • Council leaders help run the whole organization. Councils focus on big-picture topics like research, training, and helping people speak up for their rights.
  • SIGs are smaller groups that focus on one specific topic, like finding jobs or mental health.
