Opening Plenary: Listening, Partnering, and the Making of a Movement: Inside the Jane Goodall Oral History Project

Monday, November 9, 2026

9:00 am - 10:30 am

Potomac Ballroom

Jane Goodall changed how we understand animals and inspired a global movement for a better world. How did she do it, and what can we learn from the people who helped make that movement possible? Developed with Goodall during her final years, The Jane Goodall Oral History Project preserves more than 200 firsthand accounts of her life and leadership, including the challenges, contradictions, and relationships behind her public legacy. In this keynote, project founder and Georgetown University professor Dr. John Trybus shares stories and insights from this ongoing effort to understand Goodall as an unconventional leader of social change. Together, these voices reveal how listening, innovation, and partnership helped turn one scientist’s work into collective action across generations and borders, offering lessons for anyone working to build a more hopeful world.
