Leading Change Session: Beyond the Data: How Stories of Disability Change Hearts, Minds, and Policy

Tuesday, November 10, 2026

9:00 am - 10:30 am

Ballroom Level: Potomac Ballroom

At a time when so much is at stake for people with disabilities, facts and figures alone are not enough to protect or advance disability policy. In this fireside chat, Emily Ladau, disability rights advocate and author of Demystifying Disability, will draw on lived experience and professional expertise to show how real stories of policy’s impact can change hearts, minds, and ultimately laws. The conversation will explore how to meet people where they are and navigate evolving questions about what is okay to say while still working toward inclusion and accessibility for all. Throughout, the focus will remain on why disabled people must be at the center of our own stories and have seats at the table. Attendees will come away with practical communication approaches, a reminder of their “why,” and renewed hope that sharing our stories can make the world more accessible for the disability community.
