Project Description:
The Institute on Disability is the flagship for New Hampshire's University Center for Excellence on Disability, together with the Division of Genetics and Child Development Children's Hospital at Dartmouth, and the Department of Pediatrics at Dartmouth Medical School; the Institute for Health, Law, and Ethics at Pierce Law Center; and the Center on Community Economic Development and Disability at Southern New Hampshire University. The Institute on Disability was established in 1987 at the University of New Hampshire with a mission to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities into their schools and communities. The Institute, a University Center for Excellence on Disability, works with students and faculty, conducts statewide training, participates in grant-funded model demonstration projects, conducts research and engages in collaborative partnerships with other statewide organizations that are committed to improving the lives of persons with disabilities and their families. Staff from the Institute on Disability currently supports local and national projects of significance in the following areas: Family Support Inclusive Education Transportation Community Building Employment Support Homeownership Early Childhood Classroom Support Assistive Technology Postsecondary Education Literacy Maternal and Child Health The Institute supports people with disabilities, their families, and professionals to achieve inclusive communities: *The Home of Your Own project has helped more than 500 individuals since 1994 to purchase their own homes in 23 states across the nation. *More than 400 family members and individuals with disabilities have graduated from the Leadership Series since 1987 and affect change at local and state levels. *Children with disabilities and their families have received interdisciplinary, family and child-centered evaluations and consultations since 1994 at the Seacoast Regional Child Development Clinic.
