Project Description:
The population targeted for changes are families affected by FASD, specifically children with FASD in the South Dakota Junvenile Justice System. The project will develop a needs assessment to determine an appropriate system of identification and intervention services for individuals with FASD in the juvenile justice system. This involves collaboration with state and local agencies to identify a Task Force that will develop a model of care for individuals with FASD in the juvenile justice system.
The Task Force will be limited to fifteen to twenty members, including individuals from the Department of Corrections, Department of Social Services, tribal representatives, individuals from the target population, and others from the South Dakota Juvenile Justice System. the Task Force will convene to develop the needs assessment as appropriate to the state's corrections system. The needs assessment will be designed to gather information regarding the types of services being provided, knowledge of FASD, and staff trainig needs. The Task Force will also develop the strategy that addresses the needs assessment, and will formulate an implementation and evaluation plans for the strategy development protocol.
The long-term goals of this project is to assist corrections staff in identifying and providing intervention services to juvenile offenders who may have been exposed to prenatal alcohol use. This includes a potential screening tool integrated into the current juvenile justice system, allowing for long-term sustainability for diagnosing individuals with FASD in the juvenile justice system and creating a model of care for these individuals. We would like the population to receive proper diagnosis and referrals to services, ultimately decreasing recidivism for this population.
