Maternal and Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)
Project Description:
The MCHC/RISE-UP consortium includes the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) collaborating institutions with the University Centers of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs) and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) advocacy and training programs (Kennedy Krieger Institute, University of California-Davis (UC-D), and University of South Dakota(USD)) and the Aaniiih Nakoda College. UCEDDs and LENDs have specialized multidisciplinary faculty and clinicians in the area of developmental disabilities, training, and advocacy. These faculty, clinicians, and staff will increase the geographic and interdisciplinary breadth of public health educational experiences, health disparities awareness, and training opportunities for MCHC/RISE-UP scholars. UCEDDs and LEND programs are also uniquely equipped to include MCHC/RISE-UP scholars with disabilities and promote recruitment through member sites in all 50 states and U.S. territories. Including the Aaniiih Nakoda College places an MCHC/RISE-UP site and faculty directly on the Ft. Belknap reservation. The Aaniiih Nakoda site will be led by a PhD nurse, Dr. Teresa Brockie, a long-time colleague of Dr. Belcher. Dr. Brockie grew up on the Fort Belknap reservation and is now on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. This site allows American Indian undergraduate scholars and others to conduct research, clinical shadowing, and community engagement within the Ft. Belknap community. The purpose of the MCHC/RISE-UP is to address the CDC-identified diversity shortfall in the public health workforce by addressing the following goals: Recruit up to 50 undergraduates/post-baccalaureate scholars annually, especially scholars from PUPHC, to participate in MCHC/RISE-UP to promote knowledge of and commitment to public health careers; Provide a comprehensive interactive orientation, public health seminars, and experiential mentored public health leadership experiences in clinical, community engagement and advocacy, and research that increase scholar commitment to public health careers and the elimination of health concerns;
