Project Description:
We want to start the Southwest Community Family Network in the southwest region of Indiana, specifically Evansville (Vanderburgh County) and surrounding rural communities (Posey, Warrick, and Gibson Counties). We will build the Southwest Community Family Network to connect families, agencies, and schools through a collaborative learning model that will strengthen current efforts of those involved while expanding on areas of need identified by the participating families. There is not a comprehensive system in Southern Indiana that supports parents of children with disabilities in a direct way that includes building connections, sharing resources, and offering consistent and open communication.
A connected Southwest Community Family Network would provide the following:
• Advocacy and Empowerment – By connecting families, the network will identify areas of need within the community. Together, they will amplify their voices in advocating for better services, policies, and inclusion in Southern Indiana. When individuals connect, advocacy will lead to more significant improvements in the support systems available to individuals.
• Collaboration with Agencies and Organizations – A Southwest Community Family Network would lead to more comprehensive and effective support by increasing collaboration with local organizations, schools, and government agencies to ensure that the needs of individuals with disabilities and their families are met. The Southwest Community Family Network will be a space where all voices are respected and heard, and solutions are defined and put into action.
• Education and Training – The Southwest Community Family Network will offer workshops, training sessions, and informational meetings to educate individuals and families about their rights and available services in supporting individuals with disabilities.
• Information Dissemination – By serving as a centralized entity for sharing current information about disabilities, special education, and advocacy, the Southwest Community Family Network would ensure that families have access to the latest resources, policies, and support services. This will improve their ability to navigate the complex systems in the Evansville and the surrounding rural areas.
• Resource Sharing – Families will share local resources, tips, and strategies that have worked for them. This would provide an important direct resource that will include topics identified by and related to the participating family's needs.
• Support and Community – This Network will provide emotional and social bridging and bonding support to individuals and their families. This will help them connect with others who understand their experiences and reduce feelings of isolation while empowering families to advocate more effectively.
