Infant and Toddler Train the Trainer on Early Language Supports (TELS) in Monroe County Indiana

Project Description:
The TELS project leverages a "train the trainer" model that consists of training, ongoing coaching, family education, and consultation to increase programs' quality, capacity and practice sustainability in the long term. The early language development practices promoted in the TELS project align with the Science of Reading, support the goals of Indiana's Priorities For Early Literacy, and foster children's oral language skills by equipping infant and toddler practitioners with the skills they need to support children's early language development. It also builds a program's internal capacity by training their educators to become early language support coaches so that additional program staff are trained on evidence-based early language support practices which will lead to sustainable change over time. The TELS project will use a train- the- trainer model to support the adoption of early language support practices captured in the language domains of the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS®) Infant and Toddler assessments. The CLASS® is a reliable and validated assessment tool measuring the quality of adult-child interactions in diverse settings. Year 1 will involve recruiting up to 20 Monroe County childcare practitioners/classroom teams to receive training and coaching. Indiana University's Early Childhood Center (ECC) staff, experienced with early literacy expertise and coaching experience, will provide a ½ day (3-hour) in-person training on the language support practices and another ½ day (3-hour) group training on the Practice Based Coaching (PBC) model. Trainings will be recorded for alternate staff (e.g., staff turnover) and will be used by the TELS coaching cohort in Y2 and Y3. Qualtrics will collect training and coaching evaluation data.
