Project TASK: Improving Transition Planning for Students with Autism by Enhancing Access, Skills, and Knowledge of Adult Services

        Project Description:
Youth with autism and their families frequently experience challenges with accessing adult disability services as they transition to adulthood. These obstacles are often worsened due to difficulty navigating the adult disability service system (e.g., long waiting lists, difficulty determining eligibility, lack of knowledge). An important component of improving autistic youths' outcomes is through transition planning, during which special education teachers assist their students and families with the transition from high school to post-secondary activities. However, special education teachers are often not provided sufficient resources to support students and families with accessing adult services. The primary goal of Project TASK is to develop and test a curriculum about adult disability services that teachers can use with their students and families during transition planning. We hypothesize that this program will assist teachers, students, and their families with transition planning to ultimately improve outcomes for transition-aged youth.
