Connecting for Kids + Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics (C4K + DBP): Increasing Early Autism Identification and Access to Ongoing Care
Project Description:
Connecting for Kids DBP: Increasing early autism identification and access to ongoing care through facilitated cross-system collaboration and enhanced primary care training (C4K+DBP), will utilize the Connecting for Kids (C4K) Collaborative Dialogue model (developed and piloted in 2021-23 as an AAP Healthy People 2023 funded proposal) to engage in interprofessional conversations and interdisciplinary training to support New York State primary care providers (PCPs) in early childhood autism identification and ongoing care. This project addresses primary objectives across two focus areas of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Developmental Behavioral Workforce Action Plan. Specifically, this proposal enriches training systems through innovative physician training and bolsters support for existing developmental behavioral pediatricians by advancing collaborative models of care and care delivery efficiencies. It also includes the participation of early career physicians. This C4K+DBP project will develop innovative interprofessional and community partnerships across New York Chapter 1 to examine and improve access to developmental-behavioral pediatric care, particularly for children and families who have been historically excluded and continue to fall through the cracks of complex and siloed systems. Building on national efforts and prior chapter DBP-PCP collaborations, C4K+DBP will equip a subset of champion primary care pediatricians (PCPs) to provide early childhood identification and continued care and support for children with autism and their families within their primary care practice setting. Equipping our region's PCPs with such knowledge and skills – within a framework of equity, inclusion, and justice that includes family advocate and community partnership – offers a systemic approach to address healthcare inequities in access to and receipt of developmental diagnoses and services for children and families who have experienced oppressive systems. This New York Chapter 1 C4K+DBP project will include three interwoven activities (Listen, Learn, and Lead) focused on enhancing developmental-behavioral care for children 2 to 4 years old.
1. LISTEN: Utilization of the Connecting for Kids (C4K) Collaborative Dialogue model to increase cross-sector understanding and collaboration to better support developmental-behavioral health.
2. LEARN: Provision of a full-day autism training workshop for primary care providers with introduction to the ASD-PEDS observation tool and associated resources.
3. LEAD: Establishment of a DBP-PCP Community of Practice to guide clinical care and advocacy.
