Project Description:
The purpose of NICHE-MED is to support medical schools to implement curriculum about health care for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) across the lifespan. Physicians receive very little training about disabilities/how to provide care for people with disabilities during their training. Project activities will impact medical students' attitudes, knowledge, and/or skills to address underlying ableism and address how future physicians think about disability. With respect to the NICHE project, AADMD is allotting a $15,000 grant to the University of Rochester. Aim 1: Centralize the administration and management of existing disability-focused curricular content toestablish a recognized longitudinal URSMD Disability Curriculum and ensure consistency and longevity ofthis curriculum. This aim includes a needs assessment and plan to enhance existing activities, incorportating lived experience in all 4 years od medical training. Aim 2: Expand and enhance the Disability Curriculum to provide additional education on the health disparities faced by the disability community and increase the number of opportunities for students to interact with and learn appropriate medical care from people with IDD. Aim 3: Leverage institutional and community partnerships to contribute our expertise in Supporting Communication With and For People with Disabilities to a centralized resource repository. Increasing opportunties for medical students to learn about disabilities, ableism, and how to provide care for people with disabilties will result in physicians with more knowledge, skill, and confidence in caring for people with disabilties/IDD across the lifespan.
