Project Description:
Decades of documented benefits of Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) in school settings, including decreases in discipline and increased use of pro-social skills and relationship building, has led to the implementation of PBIS in alternative program settings, including juvenile justice and mental health residential programs. Unique features of these settings have created variations across programs regarding practices that comprise Tier 1, 2, and/or 3 supports to address the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of all high-needs youth while simultaneously maintaining fidelity to core features of the PBIS framework, including data-based decision making, progress monitoring, implementation of evidence-based practices, use of a team-based model, and a hierarchy of supports.
University of Nevada, Reno will implement PBIS at four facilities in Nevada at varying levels and tiers of implementation, and collect implementation artifacts, discipline outcomes, and fidelity scores for each site across the year of implementation. PBIS will be utilized throughout all the facilities' residential areas (dorm units, cafeteria, recreation, etc.) as well as in the school setting inside each facility. Juvenile Justice Services - Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) implementation sites include: Summit View Youth Center, (Las Vegas), Desert Willow Treatment Center (Las Vegas), Nevada Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PTRF)-North (Reno), and the Nevada Youth Training Center (NYTC) located in Elko.
