Project Description:
Need: The need in our community is very deep. No other resources within the community, school districts, or State of NV are currently providing these services to families, and the families need guidance during transition. We are filling a huge need in the community. Overall Goals, Objectives, and Unusual Features: - Provide workshops focused on education for the families of individuals with disabilities between the ages of 14 and 24. - Participants will leave the workshops with the ability to move forward and achieve the next step in transition for their loved one with special healthcare needs. For example, after the special needs trust workshop we expected that the participants had enough information to move forward with their own trust for their family. 12 people from this workshop have now completed their trusts through the speakers services he provided. - We are a resource for the community on all of these topics, and are here to support these families however we are able following the workshops. We often get questions following the workshop and then are able to guide the families to support their needs. - The workshop structure is such that this is an open forum, the speakers are the experts in their field in the state of NV, with a support piece at the end of the workshop. - Each workshop ends with a task to help families work through some of the information they learned from the speaker(s). For example, following the special needs trust workshop, families were given guided time to work through their letter of intent. Expected Benefits: - Participants will increase their knowledge and understanding of each topic and how it relates to their loved one with disabilities. - Participants will walk away with new tools and ideas for the next steps in their journey caring for and supporting their loved one with disabilities. - Participants will gain new insight into the ways families access their services/supports along with any barriers they experience.
