Project Description:
The MCH-LEARN program places a strong emphasis on understanding and conducting research to advance scientific knowledge, influence policy, and inform the development of clinical and community intervention programs. Historically disadvantaged populations (HDP) include underserved (and underrepresented in the maternal and child healthcare-MCH-field) racial and ethnic populations, especially African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, and certain Asian (e.g., Vietnamese, Hmong) populations and individuals who are economically disadvantaged or discriminated against due to sexuality, ability-status, and/or other characteristics. Notably, Black and Hispanic healthcare providers are more likely to serve in areas of need among underserved populations within underserved communities compared to their White peers. Yet Black, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaskan Natives and Pacific Islanders are underrepresented in the maternal and child healthcare workforce. Increased efforts to recruit, support, and retain students from HDP into the maternal and child health (MCH) workforce are of significant public health importance to reduce health disparities and promote health equity. Aim: Foster the development of interdisciplinary leadership and research skills training at the undergraduate level in MCH public health and MCH-related health professions in preparation for careers in MCH. Aim: Provide mentorship and internship opportunities to undergraduate students through preceptorships with MCH professionals, graduate students, and MCH/Title V organizations in preparation for graduate/post-graduate education/training in MCH. Aim: Increase access to MCH undergraduate education and training through innovative and alternative methods, such as telehealth, virtual instruction, or distance-learning modalities.
