Project Description:
Over the last decade of funding, MCHC/RISE-UP provided over190 unique mentored learning opportunities divided into three public health leadership tracks, namely (1) clinical, (2) community engagement and advocacy, and (3) research. MCHC/RISE-UP leveraged mentorship opportunities, institutional partnerships and collaborations, and federal dollars to provide public health leadership opportunities for a total of 415 diverse undergraduate and post-graduate scholars (27.7% African American, 8.0% American Indian/Alaska Native, 15.4% Asian, 24.6% Hispanic/Latino, 10.6% multiracial, 3.4% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, and 24.1% White). The MCHC/RISE-UP increased scholarly knowledge of the social determinants of health through experiential leadership opportunities in sites in East Coast urban and rural, Mid-West rural and Indian Reservations, and West Coast urban regions. The purpose of the MCHC/RISE-UP is to address the CDC-identified diversity shortfall in the public health workforce by addressing the following goals: Goal A1: Recruit up to 50 undergraduates/post-baccalaureate scholars annually, especially scholars from PUPHC, to participate in MCHC/RISE-UP to promote knowledge of and commitment to public health careers. Goal A2: Provide a comprehensive interactive orientation, public health seminars, and experiential mentored public health leadership experiences in clinical, community engagement and advocacy, and research that increase scholar commitment to public health careers and the elimination of health disparities. Goal A3: Scholars in MCHC/RISE-UP will demonstrate increased knowledge of public health core competencies, evidence-based practices, social determinants of health, and increased commitment to careers in public health; and Goal A4: Increase scholars from PUPHC who work in the public health field.
