New Hampshire Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Program

The purpose of the NH LEND Program matches that of MCH: improving the health of infants, children, and adolescents who have, or are at risk for developing, neurodevelopmental and other related disabilities by: 1) preparing trainees from a wide variety of professional disciplines to assume leadership roles; 2) to ensure high levels of interdisciplinary clinical competence; and, 3) assure a culturally diverse workforce. The NH LEND Program will increase the numbers of leaders in the MCH workforce, with the particular intention to address health outcome disparities for children with NDD and Autism Spectrum Disorders in our region and nationally. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: GOAL 1: Ensure Highly Qualified and Diverse MCH Health Care Workforce. Obj. 1.1 Recruit 16 long-term trainees from NH and 5 from ME, and 1 long-term trainee from Title V annually. Obj. 1.2 Recruit 5 racially diverse and 3 ethnically diverse long-term trainees annually. Obj. 1.3 Recruit 5 trainees from medically underserved areas in New England annually. GOAL 2: Curriculum and Clinical Training Content are Successfully Developed, Sequenced and Implemented. Obj. 2.1 22 long-term trainees demonstrate improved leadership skills by increasing 50% from baseline their scores on the MCH Leadership Competencies Assessment. Obj. 2.2 Trainees demonstrate content knowledge in MCHB areas of interest through a grade of B or above in didactic training. Obj. 2.3 Trainees demonstrate high levels of interdisciplinary clinical competence with a score of 4 or 5 (5-point scale) on the Evaluation of Interdisciplinary Clinical Skills Assessment. GOAL 3: Faculty are Diverse, Productive Scholars. Obj. 3.1 Long-term trainees partner with Faculty to present 10 workshops related to Title V, NDD/ASD annually. Obj. 3.2 Faculty disseminate 18 publications annually. Obj. 3.3 Post-graduate fellows disseminate 1 publication annually. GOAL 4: Organizational and Administrative Structures are Developed and Successfully Implemented. Obj. 4.1: NH LEND Program Evaluation plan is used to improve program performance on a quarterly basis as measured by Progress Evaluation Chart. Obj. 4.2: Executive Committee meets annually to assure success and address barriers. Obj. 4.3 Advisory Committee meets annually to address all aspects of training experience. Obj. 4.4 Trainees, core faculty, and community clinic sites report > 90% satisfaction with participation in NH LEND and progress of NH LEND. Obj. 4.5: Develop and implement communications plan, increasing utilization of the project website, and identifying new strategies for recruitment. METHODOLOGY: Trainees will engage in 100 hours of Leadership training, 100 hours of Interdisciplinary Clinical Training, 100 hours of formal didactic training, 50 hours of research activity and 50 hours of policy and advocacy work. At least 60% of each cohort will be graduate trainees, 20% will be family trainees and 20% will be community fellows. HP 2020 OBJECTIVES: AHS 3, 4, 5.2, 6.2; EMC 1, 2, 3; MICH-29, 30, 31; DH-2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 20; HC-HIT 2, 3; ENT-VSL 21 COORDINATION: The NH LEND faculty and trainees are active partners in service delivery, policy development, and research through collaboration with national, regional, state and local health organizations. Partners and advisors include: Families & Consumers, Title V, NH Bureau of Developmental Services, NH Office of Minority Health. EVALUATION: The program's evaluation plan will include documenting outcomes and impacts of the project related to fund expenditures. Evaluation efforts will be fully integrated and guided by project goals. ANNOTATION: The NH LEND Program prepares graduate and post-graduate students to assume leadership positions in MCH-related fields by providing interdisciplinary leadership skill development and clinical training. NH LEND curriculum emphasizes, a) interdisciplinary leadership development, b) child development through a life course frame-work, c) broad public health perspective, d) research and scholarly activities, and e) culturally competent, family-centered partnerships with families and community providers.
