Project Description:
The Human Development Institute (HDI) at the University of Kentucky is a Primary Lead Program for a training project in Kentucky. Project Supporting Children of the OPioid Epidemic (Project SCOPE) is jointly sponsored by the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND), the Nisonger Center at The Ohio State University, and the University of Cincinnati Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). Project SCOPE will build provider capacity to apply evidence-based practices in screening, monitoring, and interdisciplinary support for children impacted by Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), trauma, and related exposures. We have assembled an interdisciplinary team of agencies who are dedicated to addressing this need. Our KY team is led by Dr. Kathy Sheppard-Jones and Dr. Caroline Gooden; with the assistance of Christine Hausman, KYs Act Early Ambassador; and Brandon Cannada for technical support. Project SCOPE will address KY's needs through implementation of a series of interactive training sessions focused on improving provider capacity to address the varied and complex needs of children with NAS and their families. The Project SCOPE curriculum was piloted by WIND, the Nisonger Center, and the University of Cincinnati UCEDD; potential topics may be viewed at http://www.uwyo.edu/wind/_files/docs/echo/calendars/echo-scope-spring-2019-calendar.pdf. The curriculum includes topics related to NAS infant and family care such as self-reflective practice, addiction and treatment, having difficult conversations, monitoring child development, and trauma and its effects. We adapt each session to meet the needs of providers and families in KY. Each series of online sessions includes 8 to10 one and a half hour sessions that are scheduled bi-weekly, for approximately a 4-month period.
