Project

Pragmatic Language Development in Children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2023
Contact Information:
Project Description:
1. Deaf and hard of hearing children, since the advent and implementation of newborn hearing screening, have collectively shown marked gains in a number of outcomes (e.g., academic, linguistic). They remain at a significant disadvantage with respect to pragmatic language abilities. 2. This workshop will bring together senior and junior scholars from around the globe to develop teams to study and implement practice in order to "move the needle" on this topic. 3. It will incorporate stakeholder 'teams' nominated by participants, who will weigh in, remotely, about ideas as they are in development. 4. It is anticipated that a measurement for the assessment of pragmatic skills will be developed. Further, a training module to assist caregivers and interventionists to foster pragmatic skill development will be developed.
