Supported Decision Making in Nevada
Project Description:
The purpose of the Supported Decision Making (SDM) Project was to educate persons with I/DD, their families and supporters about SDM and how it can lead to self-determination and limit the need for guardianship and court involvement while leading to a greater ability in making informed decisions. This project was needed because a new law was passed in Nevada in 2019 confirming that persons with disabilities are the best persons to make decisions about their lives. The new law also provides that needing assistance in aspects of daily life should not be a barrier to a person being the ultimate decision-maker in ones life.
The goals of the project were to educate people with I/DD, their families, supporters, caregivers, and the community about SDM, how to avoid guardianship, and how to maintain independent decision-making to the fullest possible extent. The project created an accessible website dedicated to resources about supported decision making and provided in-person educational seminars to both persons with I/DD and supporters; including in the rural areas.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we were not able to have in-person educational seminars, so the information was presented virtually.
