Project Description:
Problem: There is a critical shortage of pediatric subspecialty care available to children affected by ZIKV in the US Affiliated Pacific Basin jurisdictions, including American Samoa (AS), the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and Guam. The CA-LEND HPS Program proposes provide interdisciplinary (ID) training to trainees in the needs of children with neurodevelopmental and other related disabilities (NRD) and the systems of care that respond to the needs of children with ZIKV and NRD. Goals and Objectives: CA-LEND seeks to optimize the health status of children with congenital ZIKV infection and their families through: 1) Tele-education: a) Training to provide ID care to meet the training needs of ID trainees through distance learning curriculum/continuing education based upon evidence-based practices for children with, or at risk for, ZIKV and NRD; b) Recruit 6-9 short and medium term trainees from local colleges and healthcare organizations per year. Offer at least 5 training events per year. 2) Teleconsultation: ID consultation services: To meet the training needs of ID trainees through technical assistance based upon evidence-based practices for children with, or at risk for, ZIKV infection and NRD. Provide a monthly case based learning community. Respond to at least 10 ZIKV infection-related territory requests TA/consultation requests per year. 3) Telehealth: ID specialty care: To develop the infrastructure to provide ID clinical care for children with ZIKV via telehealth to territories, to support developmental monitoring, intervention, and care for children with ZIKV together with the CHLA Center for Global International Telehealth. 4) Collaboration/Systems Change: Create ID LEND ZIKV training network of funded programs to participate in quarterly calls and share resources/best practices through consultation by with national experts in family centered and culturally competent care. Activities: CA-LEND HPS curriculum is a MCH leadership competency-based program of didactics and case-based training aligned with MCHB Workforce strategic goals. Workshops, seminars and distance learning activities are proposed at multiple levels, often in partnership with our collaborators. Trainings are developed through ID and interagency collaboration, driven by needs identified via community advisors (parents/ professionals). Systems change is driven in collaboration with stakeholders and other training programs at the national and territory level. Coordination: Collaborators include: CHLA Center for Global International Telehealth Program, USC UCEDD, Hawaii/Vermont LENDs, SSG Mental Health Alliance, Family Voices- National and CA, Pacific Basin UCEDD Directors, American Samoa Dept. of Health, Pacific Islands Health Office Association (AS, CNMI, Guam, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Palau). Evaluation: Formative evaluation and summative data will be collected to document short-term and long-term outcomes of our training program. Annotation: The purpose of CA-LEND HPS Program is to produce MCH leaders in the field of NRD to enhance the life course trajectories of children with ZIKV infection and their families, with a focus on the geographic distant and underserved through advances in MCH competencies, evidence-based practice, research, evaluation, and dissemination, and systems change. Goals will be achieved through ID leadership training with evaluation, CE/TA, and systems change. Activities focus on building collaborative partnerships: territorially and nationally to leverage the resources of the program.
