Maternal and Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program
Project Description:
Two major overarching goals of Healthy People 2020 are (1) to achieve health equity and (2) eliminate preventable disease, disability, and premature death. Increasing the number of individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic populations (ie, African Americans, Hispanic/Latino persons, American Indians, Alaskan Natives, Pacific Islanders, and certain Asian populations) who work in health care and research professions is especially important to promote health equity given recent reports estimating that by the year 2050, the number of individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups will increase to nearly half. Of concern, however, is current US census trends that do not project a burgeoning of a diverse scientific workforce that reflects the projected diversity of the US population. Without intentional and sustained efforts to recruit and retain well-qualified individuals from underrepresented populations into the science workforce, there will be a shortage of scientists and engineers that will have a negative impact on the US economy and general health of its citizenry.
Maternal and Child Health Careers/Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP) is a 10-week summer public health leadership program that provides mentored clinical, community engagement, and research experiences for junior, senior and recent baccalaureate degree students. The MCHC/RISE-UP learning environment is provided through a consortium of three University Centers of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) sites partnering with Minority Serving Institutions, namely (1) Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI, lead agency) https://www.kennedykrieger.org/professional-training/professional-training-programs/rise-programs, partnering with faculty at Morgan State University (a Historically Black College and University [HBCU]), Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Maryland Health Department, and community agencies, (2) the University of South Dakota (USD) in the Central Plains area, partnering with Tribal Serving Institutions and communities in Indian country http://www.utexas.edu/nursing/news/2013/healthcare.html, and Sanford USD Medical Center and Research; and (3) the University of Southern California (USC)/Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and their partner, California State University Los Angeles (CSU-LA), a federally designated Minority and Hispanic Serving Institution in the Los Angeles area (West Coast) https://www.dropbox.com/s/4zd299gus136z19/MCHC%20RISE%20UP%20LA%20-%20Highlight_.mp4 .
