Project Description:
Addressing projected shortages in the public health workforce, especially among African American, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and select Asian American populations is a significant medical and biomedical educational challenge. The Public health Leadership and Learning Undergraduate Student Success (PLLUSS) is a training program funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Ferguson Fellowships ultimate expected benefit is to promote a more diversified and equal health system by introducing students from underrepresented groups to the field of public health. The PLLUSS Program is a public health education program that provides research experiences for undergraduate sophomore and rising junior students. The PLLUSS Program is conducted at three sites, (1) Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI, lead agency), (2) California State University Los Angeles (CSU-LA), a federally designated Minority and Hispanic Serving Institution in the Los Angeles area (West Coast); and (3) the University of Cincinnati. Students work with mentors to develop and/or disseminate evidence-based public health information. Scholars may also gain clinical experience and develop leadership skills.
