Project Description:
The Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) program provides information, dissemination, training, diagnostic services, consultation services, and family support to people with an ASD and their families. Information dissemination consists of an email list serve; web page; Facebook, Twitter, and You Tube sites; books, DVDs, videos, etc available at no cost for checkout from the Wegner Center; an Autism handbook; and various other products that are downloadable from the web page.
The program offers graduate level coursework through the University of South Dakota as well as hosting two symposiums yearly, one in the spring and one in the fall. Intensive training sessions (Summer Training) focusing on teachers and related service personnel is held during the summer with one week held on the eastern side of the state and one week held on the western side of the state. A unique training designed for public school district personnel who work with students with ASD involves didactic sessions combined with on-site consultation to enhance skills used in the classroom.
Staff include a school psychologist and two autism specialists with a special education background. The director of the Autism Program is also involved in the Act Early efforts through AUCD and CDC.
