Sports and Outdoor Assistive Recreation Project
Project Description:
SOAR is working with nine community parks and recreation departments in the state to enhance their abilities to provide inclusive recreational opportunties for residents with disabilities. The primary activities consist of assessing the recreational needs of those with disabilities, providing training to parks department staff and case managers of local service providers, sponsoring a demonstration day of recreational activities for the entire community, and developing a system of communication in which providers will convey the recreational needs of their clients to parks staff prepared to meet it. The US Department of Education awarded this grant after a successful three year effort it previously funded in which assistive recreational training and technical assistance was provided to a variety of recreational businesses and agencies around the state.
