Project Description:
Jot It Down is a weekly, one-hour writing club that gives adults with IDD supported opportunities to think creatively and express themselves. Jot It Down clubs are comprised of four to six people with IDD and two volunteer facilitators who gather weekly in a bookstore, coffee shop, or caf to write such things as short stories, poems, blog posts, journal entries, and letters and postcards. Jot It Down members provide support and encouragement for one another as they exchange ideas, socialize, and try new things. Members may work individually or collectively, depending on the activity and preference of the members. Facilitators are equipped with a variety of tools and activities to assist in the writing process, though members choose which activities they will to do and how long they will do them. These tools may be hi-tech (e.g. electronic tablet), lo-tech (e.g. pen and paper), or no-tech (e.g. oral storytelling). Objectives: 1. To increase lifelong learning opportunities for people with IDD. 2. To increase authentic social experiences for people with IDD. 3. To increase the inclusion of people with IDD in community settings.
