2014 Prevalence Risk Factors and Health Consequences Of Obesity
Project Description:
The social, physical, and mental health issues that many youth and young adults with developmental disabilities encounter as a result of their disability can be exacerbated by the additional health condition of obesity. Obesity Prevalence data and the definitions used to classify youth with disabilities vary from study to study. The discrepancies in rates of obesity and overweight in different studies makes it difficult and often confusing to interpret the findings. The risk factors associated with obesity in youth/ young adults with disabilities, including personal and community characteristics, are also largely unknown. This lack of understanding of the risk factors and consequences of obesity among youth/young adults with disabilities limits opportunities to develop health promotion strategies and programs to address this problem. This study directly addresses both of these key knowledge gaps by producing a comprehensive set of secondary data analyses that addresses prevalence, risk factors and consequences of obesity in youth and young adults with physical and cognitive disabilities. The study also explores promising community-based and culturally competent strategies and programs for reducing obesity and obesity-related secondary conditions among adolescents and young adults with disabilities with Hispanic origins.
