Project Description:
The specific aims of this study are to adapt and test an existing two-stage methodology to assess the prevalence, treated prevalence, and co-occurrence of internalizing, externalizing, and tic disorders in Colorado school-aged youth (ages 5-17 years). In the first stage, teachers will screen 5,500 students. In the second stage, parents will complete a diagnostic interview for a subsample of this population of students (600 rated high, 600 rated low). A stratified random sample of students (Aurora Public Schools) from the general education population as well as students with IEP's who spend at least part of the day in general education classes; their teachers; parents of a subsample of students who screen high or low. Stage 1 screenings began in April 2014 and ended with the close of the school year in May. Thirty out of 50 schools in the Aurora Public School District participated. A total of 858 teachers completed screens on 4,183 students included in our stratified random sample. Stage 2 diagnostic interviews with parents of a subsample of students who screened high or low in Stage 1 began in September 2014 and will continue through August 2015. As of May 2015, approximately 135 parent interviews have been completed.
