Project Description:
The Need: Approximately 10% to 11% of children and adolescents have both a mental health disorder and evidence of functional impairment. A far greater numbers have impairing symptoms and psychosocial challenges that may not meet criteria for a DSM-IV diagnosis. Most of these children do not receive timely assessment, accurate diagnosis and/or adequate treatment. Consequently, many continue to have symptoms into adulthood. In fact, approximately 50% of adults with mental health problems had the origins of their disorders during childhood. There is a growing recognition that mental health comorbidities in children and adolescents often drive health care utilization and contribute to skyrocketing health care costs. And for many urban, minority children living in poverty, the adverse consequence of undiagnosed and untreated mental health and developmental problems is amplified. Goals: to create a new model for collaborative office rounds that utilizes telecommunication and links 3 sites with different professionals and contexts. The cultural variation in Singapore is a particular strength of this collaboration. We anticipate that all participants will become sensitive to cultural variation and skilled in dealing with families from different language and cultural groups.
