Project Description:
This survey course will consist of eight case-based learning modules. Each module is based on one of the eight core competencies. In the training sessions, trainers will learn how to guide practitioners through the learning modules and how to support and assess their learning. The learning modules serve as a tool to educate participants about the specific competency, to allow the participant to evaluate their own knowledge of the competency, and extend their knowledge through the case study provided and the science explained about the importance of that competency. The learning modules will be self-guided but participants will have access to the instructors throughout the course via email or other methods deemed appropriate by the trainers. Each proposed learning module will consist of: ? a presentation about the science behind the competency and evidence-based practices that support each competency ? an introduction to an authentic case that illustrates the competency and provides some issues to consider and decisions a practitioner might need to make in working with a child and family. Each case will present a question or issue to consider and think about using various materials described below. ? supporting video and audio podcasts that give more information about the case and the issue involved ? supporting documents such as an IFSP or student work that help to make decisions about the case ? a feedback form that would be submitted to the course instructor in which the participant explains how to handle the case and provides evidence from the case or other sources justifying their decisions ? a video podcast of classroom lectures relevant to the topic, if applicable ? resource guide for additional research, websites, and activities ? research articles to support learning on topic ? examples of observation and cognitive measures that can be used to document competency development Trainers would complete the modules themselves and then learn more about their implementation during the live training sessions. Each live session would be video and audio taped to support future trainings as webinars. The trainers will be provided with an instructor?s manual that will provide details on the course and in-depth information about each learning module and how to teach it and support participants. The attached Severe Disabilities Module syllabus (Severe Disabilities 3) is an example of a learning module with similar components as those listed above.
