Project Description:
Nebraska’s Early Language and Literacy Learning Connection (NELLLC) will engage partners from higher education, early childhood program/services, community members, and families to improve children’s early language and literacy learning experiences, thus contributing to their success as learners and preventing them from encountering reading difficulties once they enter school. NELLLC is designed to accomplish the following: A. Early childhood educators/caregivers working in communities with high poverty and second language learners apply the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively develop and support young (birth through pre-kindergarten) children’s language and literacy competencies. B. Early childhood faculty/trainers understand the importance of early language and literacy and demonstrate skills to effectively incorporate the literacy content into coursework/in-service training that support early childhood educator’s/caregiver’s learning. C. Young children participating in programs in high poverty communities develop early literacy skills to support better reading outcomes and successful learning experiences in school. D. Parents take the necessary steps to enhance relationships with their children, to promote their healthy development and learning across all domains (intellectual, emotional, social, aesthetic, and physical), and model healthy behaviors in their own lives. E. Professional development providers for early childhood educators can adopt and implement this grant’s professional development framework, processes, and content related to advancing children’s early language and literacy development. The evaluation will include a multi-method approach which examines both processes and outcomes. Formative evaluation will be used to help refine and modify the procedures of the model. Outcome data will be collected regarding the five identified project goals and corresponding project indicators.
