        Project Description:
        This annual series of workshops provides training for school teams that include both general and special educators. Workshops focus on innovative evidence-based practices to improve the quality of education for students with diverse learning needs. Founded in 1996, the Britt Henderson Training Series is made possible at no cost to participating schools through an endowment from the Robert and Carol Henderson family in memory of their son Britt.
Workshops are led by faculty at Vanderbilt's Peabody College of Education and Human Development who are Vanderbilt Kennedy Center researchers. Topics vary by faculty expertise and leadership. The Series Faculty Director is Andrea Capizzi, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of the Practice, Department of Special Education.
A series of 2-hour workshops are held over the course of the academic year so participating individuals and school teams can receive training and support in implementing evidence-based strategies at their own schools. Sessions will include opportunities for sharing ideas and problem-solving ways to implement each strategy in participants? own classrooms with students who need it. Participants will be able bring related knowledge and resources back to their school to share and use to support other teachers in implementing strategies. Topics are designed to address both academic and behavioral concerns, and include: supportive classroom management, planning and delivering effective instruction, effective inclusion, secondary intervention strategies, functional assessment-based interventions, transition strategies, and training and utilizing para-educator support. Essentially, The Britt Henderson Training Series provides school practitioners with an opportunity to put evidence-based strategies supported with current educational research into practice in a feasible and effective way.
