Clinical Trial for the PoNS device
Project Description:
This clinical trial will evaluate the use of a new device to improve balance in adults with MS. Thirty individuals with multiple sclerosis will be assigned to either start with therapy plus active PoNS or therapy plus a sham PoNS. At the start of the study, the subjects will initially participate in two-weeks of intensive therapy at UNMC, where they will work one-on-one with a physical therapist. This will be followed by an at-home training protocol that will be performed for an additional 12-weeks. Following completion of the 14-weeks of therapy (2 weeks at UNMC + 12 weeks at home), the participants in the sham group will crossover and will receive the active PoNS+Therapy an additional 6-weeks, and the active group will stop using the PoNS but will continue to perform their exercises for an additional 6-weeks. Outcomes from this investigation will determine the efficacy of using the PoNS to improve the patient?s mobility and reduce the symptoms that are associated with multiple sclerosis.
