Project Description:
This project addresses the need for culturally and linguistically appropriate health education materials for individuals with DD and their families. The Sonoran UCEDD is developing health education messages and materials targeted to health issues faced by adults with DD, and on health strategies to prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Health promotion efforts include the creation of health information fact sheets and the development of an online resource center, both of which are intended to provide information to adults with a developmental disability as well as caregivers. Online Resource Center: The online resource center offers a unique approach to cataloguing quality health and wellness web-based information by utilizing descriptors such as intended audience, literacy level, type of media (e.g., print, video, audio), and availability in alternate language and format. The website will link to general and disability-related health content including topics like nutrition, exercise, oral health, mental health, disease prevention, safety and much more. Health Information Fact Sheets: UCEDD developed health and wellness fact sheets, in English and Spanish, will be featured on the website in addition to print dissemination. Each fact sheet will be presented in two print versions (beginner and intermediate reading levels) as well as a narrated version delivered via Flash Video technology. This design was determined with a goal of creating health information resources that can be utilized and accessed by groups of individuals representing a broad range of developmental disabilities.
