Project Description:
1. Promoting alignment of early childhood/OST professional development and ?Race to the Top? priorities and efforts as part of overall Readiness Center agenda, UMASS Boston will organize and facilitate a Problem Based Learning Seminar with Math and Science educators and Early Childhood educators, including higher education faculty and educators working in the field. This activity will be funded equally through the Region 4 and Region 6 EPS grants and will include educators and faculty from both regions. ? Participants will work together to understand the needs of the early childhood and out-of-school-time field for additional support in the area of STEM education. ? Participants will consider approaches for the adaptation of existing education courses, and existing general education STEM courses, to incorporate information about how children acquire STEM concepts and how the educators who work with them can support children?s STEM learning. ? This Problem Based Learning Seminar will produce specific recommendations for incorporating information about children?s acquisition of concepts essential to success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math into coursework for early childhood and out-of-school-time educators at Associates and Bachelors degree levels.
