Project Description:
This project is in response to a request by the Hawaii Legislature to screen preschool children to identify vision or hearing problems, delays in cognitive skills, physical skills, or social-emotional behavior. The project is a community collaborative and is funded by the Aloha United Way with the grantee for the funding the Learning Disabilities Association of Hawaii, which is the federally funded PTI for the state. The project is taking place along the Waianae Coast and is screening 3 and 4 year olds who are not part of any existing program. Resources are available to ensure follow-up for the children. The project will provide care coordination and assist the families in accessing other resources, include Medical, SCHIP, preschools, and child care. The CDS is conducting the evaluation of the project and providing technical assistance for its implementation. The benefit of the project is to enable preschool children to be healthy and ready to continue learning when they reach kindergarten.
