Project Description:
This weekly 2-hour seminar course focused on four conditions?Down syndrome as a example of a disability affecting intellectual function, cerebral palsy as a disability affecting mobility, fragile X as an example of a genetic disorder with variable manifestations, and autism as a disorder of unknown etiology affecting social skills and language development. In each case, we explored the current concepts regarding the biological basis of the condition and medical therapies in use or in development. We also discussed how laws and regulations have a substantial impact on the lives of individuals with these conditions. Course requirements included visits to community agencies that serve individuals with disabilities. Students prepared a final paper on another disability, discussing the condition from biology to policy.
