IOTI - Healthy LifestylesTraining
Project Description:
Project Context.
It is the intent of the proposed training project to respond to the US Surgeon General's call for an "immediate action to prevent and reduce its (obesity) impact on both the individual and society at large," (Rimmer & Yamaki, 2006, p.22) and address the second WHO recommendation listed above by providing Healthy Lifestyles training and promoting healthy behaviors to individuals with disabilities.
Project Focus.
The primary target population for the proposed project is individuals with disabilities participating in programs such as community mental health clubhouses, community provider day treatment services, post-secondary school transition programs, etc. It is anticipated that the training will be offered as a six part series to at least six distinct community groups across the state for a minimum of 36 separate training sessions. The anticipated total number of trainees to be reached by these training sessions is expected to be at a minimum between 60-90 individuals (10-15 individuals per training site).
The expected project outcomes include the following:
Outcome 1: Increase trainees' understanding of the key components of a healthy lifestyle.
Outcome 2: Trainees will identify two healthy lifestyle goals and develop a detailed plan to achieve their unique goals.
Outcome 3: Trainees will report an increase in their overall health status.
Outcome 4: Trainees will develop specific peer support strategies to assist one another in accomplishing their healthy lifestyle goals.
