Project Description:
Project Context WebAIM began in 1999 as a FIPSE grant to improve the accessibility of web content for individuals with disabilities in postsecondary settings. Since the initial funding, WebAIM has grown to include various projects and initiatives all on issues important to web accessibility. The WebAIM umbrella includes grant funded research & development projects as well as fee-for-service work in web accessibility. Moreover, WebAIM sells training products and software tools and provides an array of information and tutorials for free as a service to the web accessibility community. WebAIM also provides free access to the evaluation tool, WAVE (www.wave.webaim.org) as a public service. The past 9 years of experience have made WebAIM one of the leading providers of Web accessibility expertise internationally. Project Focus WebAIM's mission is "to expand the potential of the Web for people with disabilities by providing the knowledge, technical skills, tools, organizational leadership strategies, and vision that empower organizations to make their own content accessible to people with disabilities." WebAIM accomplishes this mission in many ways. Staffs provide services directly to organizations, develop software tools, create instructional media, foster active online communities, engage in research, and participate in policy dialogues and processes. Services WebAIM services include many things such as training, site evaluation, accessible site design, and consultation. WebAIM has provided services and products to a wide variety of clients and partners from all sectors of society including government, non-profit, education, business, and health care. FY '09 WebAIM services have been used this fiscal year by groups such as the Centers for Disease Control, Commission on Rehabilitation Counseling, Bell Aliant Regional Communications, Thomson Reuters, Elon University, Utah State University, Utah LEND, Utah's SSDI Benefit Offset Pilot Project, Utah's Project Workability, Options for Independence, Universal Designers and Consultants, Bedford Freeman and Worth, Timber Creek Consulting, and Ariba.
