Multi-University Consortium Teacher Training Program Sensory Impairments (VISEP)
Project Description:
Project Context
A critical shortage of highly qualified public school personnel to serve children with sensory impairments has been identified in Utah and the nation. There is a need for personnel that have the skills and knowledge, derived from practices that have been determined through research and experience to be successful, to serve these children.
Project Focus
The Multi-University Consortium for Teacher Training in Sensory Impairments (VISEP), is a cooperative effort between the Special Education Departments of the University of Utah and Utah State University.
VISEP provided coursework leading to a teaching credential necessary to serve infants, toddlers and preschoolers (birth to five years) who have vision or hearing impairments, and their families. Graduates received a Utah Early Childhood Special Education Certificate with an endorsement in vision or hearing for children aged 0-5. Students could also receive a B.S. or M.S. depending on their specific program arrangements. It was available statewide and in border areas of neighboring states.
Graduates are qualified to fill many roles in serving children who have sensory impairments. These roles include early interventionists in home and other natural settings, classroom teachers, and support specialists in both categorical and inclusive programs.
The program stressed family-centered practices that are sensitive to cultural diversity, and utilizes distance-learning technology to support students in rural and remote locations.
Services:
The project funded approximately 30 students a year at the University of Utah or Utah State University over the five years of the grant, and utilized distance learning technology to support students in rural and remote locations. Additional emphasis was placed on recruiting students from diverse cultures and underserved populations. Latino students and several from the Navajo tribe received certification in visual impairment.
FY 2011 Focus
To date, 6 USU students have completed their certification and 18 are currently enrolled.
