Technical Assistance Center for Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Project Description:
Research shows that babies identified with hearing losses who receive effective early intervention before 6 months of age are able to function on level wit hearing peers (Yoshinago-Itano, 1997). The TA HRG project goals include increasing competencies of professionals working with children who are deaf or hard of hearing ages birth - 21 and their families in hopes of optimizing their development. This is done through regional and statewide trainings, provision of technical assistance and consultation. One unsual feature is VNOC (VA Network of Consultants) a cadre of 30 specialists in various areas of deafness developed through TA HRG to provide consultation/training in their geographic regions. By increasing competency of professionals, it is expected tht the children who are deaf/hard of hearing and their families will benefit with improved education and quality of life.
