Project Description:
This is year 7 of this grant, funded from the Nevada Department of Education (NDE). Significant research demonstrates the need for schools to implement comprehensive intervention systems that address the academic and behavioral needs of students who are not meeting targeted goals. As determined by a statewide stakeholder group in the spring and fall of 2005, Nevada schools should develop and sustain intervention systems that support the implementation of four essential components. These four components include: data-based decision making, collaborative outcome planning, monitoring for progress, and interventions. When correctly designed, an intervention system that adheres to these four components has the capacity to support school personnel, parents, and students to realize desired student achievement outcomes for every student. Students also need access to quality instruction from personnel who have the skills and capacity to meet their unique instructional needs. In order to ensure that each teacher in Nevada has such skills, systemic changes are necessary in pre-service preparation, teacher licensure, and ongoing professional development. To realize these changes, stakeholders must agree on the specific data-based concerns that exist, must determine strategies for resolving these concerns, and must collaboratively take responsibility for implementing an action plan that will result in the fulfillment of the selected reform strategies. Project Objectives are: Intervention Systems Initiative- A fourth set of schools will participate in the project for the 2009/10 school year (Cohort 3). In collaboration with this project, these schools will receive training and support from the Nevada Department of Education and the Instructional Consultation Lab at the University of Maryland to develop and implement intervention systems. Special Education District Administrators (SEDA)- This project will collaborate with the NDE to host SEDA meetings and support expenses related to SEDA networking and collaboration. RRR Conference- This project will support a two-day training for parents and administrators on the Regulations of Special Education, the Relationships between parents and school personnel and the Results in Nevada.
