Project Description:
This project provides formal, competency-based training (Certificate and Associate degree program) for people who provide or intend to provide support for persons experiencing disabilities in community and educational settings. Training is offered in cooperation with Prince William Sound Community College. The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Disability Services has three emphasis areas: Community Support, Educational Support, and Speech-language Support. The program offers seven core courses focused on the skills and knowledge needed to provide community based support for persons with developmental disabilities, mental illness, and/or other disabilities requiring long-term care or educational intervention. In addition, 11 specialty courses are offered. Students may elect to take the courses for professional development only. Students receive individualized advising to help them juggle work, school, and family demands. Mental Health Trust Authority Scholarships are awarded to students, based on submitted recommendations, for up to 50% of the tuition for the specialty courses in disability support.
