Project Description:
This project is an effort to begin an empirical examination of person and group identity for persons with disabilities. The project uses qualitative and quantitative research to explore the experiences of people with disabiliteis in acheiveing a positive disability identity and in managing multiple minority identities (involving the intersection of disability with race/ethicity, gender, and sexual orientation). The project encompasses the formulation of a model of disability identity development through a grounded theory approach. It also involves the construction and validation of a disability identity development scale that operationalizes the model for use in research and applied fields such as counseling and education.
