Falling through the gaps: low income ethnic minority young mothers with learning disabilities

Project Description:
The National Longitudinal Transition Study (2001) revealed a significantly higher parenting rate among young women with learning disabilities (50%) than those in the general population (28%). When parenting and poverty are considered in concert with learning disability, a particularly unique set of challenges is posed to educate systems that are mandated to prepare these youth for successful transitions into adult life. Yet, researchers have not studied the unique experiences and service needs of teen mothers with learning disabilities. This study will use a qualitative approach to assess the service needs of, and service system responses to, teenage mothers with learning disabilities during their transition years. This study will be the first to expolore educational and vocational service needs, service system responses, and service gaps from multiple perspectives, including those of low-income, ethnic minority teen mothers with learning disabilities, and special education and youth vocational personnel.
