Community-Based Assistive Technology Pilot study in the Latino Community
Project Description:
The broad objective of this activity is to increase the participation of Spanish speaking persons with disabilities in the NIDRR/RESNA/UMISR Survey of AT/IT Use and Need in order to learn if and how their responses to the survey questions differ from the responses of English speaking persons with disabilites. The English version, now completed, was administered to 1,414 respondents. In this survey, only 16 persons, or 1%, reported being of Hispanc background, compared to the 2000 U.S. Census estimate of about 13%, with higher rations of Spanish speaking persons in the southwestern parts of the US. This under-representation of Hispanics in the AT/IT Survey constitutes a rather serious problem. This project will work to obtain proportional representation, and thus a higher level of validity of the survey's findings.
