Healthy Pathways to Student Success
Project Description:
HPSS is a longitudinal study of the relationships between child health and school performance funded by NICHD.
HPSS is unique in its positive conceptualization of health as a set of desirable assets that are called upon constantly, whenever a person experiences a change or recognizes a discrepancy between what is and what is desired.
Key health assets include: balanced nutrition; physical activity; vitality; restful sleep and wakefulness; management of stress; rewarding friendships; involvement with family; and, belongingness in school. We have collected 3 years of longitudinal data on child health assets, family and community characteristics, and academic outcomes through the annual administration of comprehensive child health questionnaires to 2,800 students in grades 4 - 8 and their parents, and the collection of school records. Research in 2009-10 will include establishment of the Healthy Pathways Partnership in southwest Philadelphia. We hope to develop a novel school-based, family-engaged intervention to strengthen health assets that enable children to thrive, become competent and flourishing individuals, and attain high levels of life satisfaction.
