Project Description:
Training Goals: The overacrching purpose of this project aims to improve the health of children, youth and families by training the next generation of leaders in pediatrics to address to the biopsychosocial needs of children and families from both an interdisciplinary and public health perspective, in a manner that is interdisciplinary, compassionate, family-centered and culturally competent. Towards this goal we have provided education in developmental-behavioral pediatrics to post-doctoral fellows, pediatric residents, medical students and primary care providers. We have provided eductaion to trainees in child and adolescent psychiatry, pediatric psychology, occupational therapy and speech and language apthology as well as technical assistance to community organizations, schools and parent groups. Fellowship Goals: The principal goal of this project is to improve the health status of children, youth and families by preparing fellowship trainees for leadership positions in developmental-behavioral pediatrics. Our training program provides comprehensive, compassionate, family centered and culturally competent prpgrams that promote the health and development of families and children, especially those that are underserved and at high risk for developmental and behavioral concerns and troubled lives. To this end, we have designed, initiated and systematically refined an intensive three-year fellowship curriculum in deveopmental-behavioral pediatrics, with an emphasis on acquisition of knowledge and skills at the mastery level regarding practice, tecahing, research and leadership in primart as well as tertiary settings. The content of the first year of the fellowship is 801% clinical, 10% research and 10% didactic instruction. The second year is at least 50% research, 10% advocacy, 10-40% clinical and 10% didactic instruction. The third year consists of 801% research and 20% clinical experiences. In our original application we identified 17 goals for fellowship trainees related to clinical care, teaching and research.
