Project Description:
Project Context: Family Support 360 (FS 360) is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Administration on Developmental Disabilities (ADD), part of the Administration for Children and Families. Its purpose is to create a one-stop family support center that will assist families of individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) access comprehensive systems of family support services that are family-centered and family-directed. The FS 360 initiative views the family as a unit and provides services for the entire family, not just the individual with a developmental disability. Project Focus: The Center for Persons with Disabilities (CPD) at Utah State University will use a participatory action model to design an implementation plan focusing on emergency preparedness for a comprehensive one-stop family support center (Family Support 360: Project 911) serving the Salt Lake County area in Utah. The families in this rapidly growing area are culturally and linguistically diverse, are generally underserved by existing formal service systems, and often face economic challenges. This model project will annually serve at least 60 individuals with Developmental Disabilities (DD) or families of persons with DD. Project Products/Services: The initial activity of this project will be to A major activity will be to organize a coalition of partners including the following: -Families and individuals with DD; -Community service organizations (American Red Cross, ACCESS Utah, 211), Administration on Developmental Disabilities); -Funded programs (Utah Developmental Disabilities Council, Disability Law Center); -Two projects of national significance (Disability Family Support Center and Becoming Leaders for Tomorrow); -State agencies (Division of Services for People with Disabilities, Utah Transit Authority); -Salt Lake County Mayor's office; -SLC Fire Department and Emergency Management -Faith-based organizations (Holy Cross Ministries, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints); -Disability advocacy groups (People First, Autism Council of Utah). This array of partners will: (1) Develop a plan to effectively train individuals with DD and family members to prepare for emergency situations; (2) Develop consensus on outcomes, guiding principles and implementation strategies; (3) Catalog the resources and assets; (4) Review related state laws and policies; (5) Draft policies and memoranda; (6) Design and approve a comprehensive implementation plan for a one-stop family support center to support 60 individuals with Developmental Disabilities (DD) or families of persons with DD before, during and after emergencies.
